Spray Tan Instructions
Exfoliate Before You Go for a Spray Tan
The spray tanning solution affects only the dead skin cells. Your skin has a buildup of dead skin cells on top of it. The thicker the layer, the sooner it will rub off. If you exfoliate, the layer will be very shallow, and it will take a while for it to “build up”. Your spray tan will last longer. It is important to use either exfoliating glove or products that don't contain any oils; otherwise the oily barrier can stop the spray tanning solution getting through.
Don’t Wear Deodorant, Moisturizer or Makeup Before Spray Tanning
Many deodorants will stop spray tanning solution going through. Some others will turn the armpits green (you can imagine my horror when a client came out of change room with green circles under her arms- I never forgot to make sure nobody else made that mistake). Few moisturizers and makeup products can act as a barrier, not letting the full amount of the solution to attach itself to the skin (that said I had very many wonderful tans with moisturizers and make up on- but you never know which ones will mess the tan up). As soon as you've had your spray tan you can apply deodorant and make up. Dry out in front of a fan. The tan needs to “set” and the process will take about an hour. It is best to bring clothes and shoes as loose as possible to wear after your spray tanning session, to make sure nothing rubs off.
Prolong Your Healthy Spray Tan by Following These Easy Steps:
For the next 4-8 hours:
* Stay away from all forms of moisture (water, rain, swimming, perspiration, etc.) for 6 hours
* Do not get a manicure, pedicure or waxing (it is best to do this before your spray tan)
For the next 7-14 days:
* Quick, cool showering is optimal.
* Use mild soap and stay away from using loofahs or exfoliants. Patting your skin instead of rubbing is best.
* Keep your skin moisturized. This will enhance the life of your spray tan.
* If you shave, use a sharp razor with moisturizer. Shave cream and oils are usually not the best options to use.
* If any body part appears too dark (usually due to dry skin), apply baking soda or a toothpaste with peroxide to even out the color.
How do spray tanners work?
The principle tanning agent used in all self-tanning formulas is dihydroxyacetone (DHA). This ingredient does not produce a "real tan" by increasing the skin's melanin levels, rather it creates a tanned appearance by developing a brown color on the surface of the skin. The action of DHA is limited to the upper layer of the skin and involves a reaction between DHA and skin proteins and oxygen that produces brown compounds. This process is similar to what occurs when you slice open an apple and the surface of the apple browns when it's exposed to the oxygen in the air. The development of color takes anywhere from 2 to 4 hours and the intensity of color is dependent upon the DHA concentration in the product as well as each tanner's individual skin characteristics. The color developed by the DHA usually lasts 7-14 days and begins to fade as the top layer of the skin naturally exfoliates.
How many days will a sunless tan last?
The longevity of a sunless tan depends on level of clear and bronze you choose, the skin's natural exfoliation process, and on the skincare regimen followed before and after application.
On average, spray tanners last 7-12 days. A professionally application, I.e. a sunless tan received at a salon or spa, will last longer than an at-home application as there is usually a greater percentage of DHA used.
At-home application (lotions, sprays, mousse, etc.) = 3 to 5 days
Professional application (stand-up spray units, airbrush, Custom Bronzing) = 5-12 days
How long should I wait after spray tanning before I shower?
TheDHA solutions takes about 6-8 hours to fully develop. Clients will receive the best results if they can avoid bathing until the day after their sunless session. If they must bathe, they should wait a minimum of 6-hours after the application. If showering prior to the 6-hour post application recommendation, a simple rinse with water only, is best. Soap destroys DHA. Delayed bathing allows the DHA bronzer sufficient time to complete its reaction with the amino acids (proteins) within the skin. The cosmetic bronzer is the color that is immediately visible during the session and it will wash off during the first shower, revealing the DHA bronze tan beneath.
Why is keeping skin moisturized essential to maintain great sunless results?
It is important to keep skin moisturized after sunless tanning as dry, flaky skin will slough off faster and color will fade sooner. You basically want to slow down your body's natural exfoliation process. Sunless tan-extending products with a light self-tanning bronzer, help hydrate skin and maintain even, natural-looking color longer by providing subtle bronzers.
Will the spray from a spray tanning application come off on my clothes?
If you are using a spray solution with a cosmetic bronzer, some of the bronze color may rub off on clothing or bed sheets. This is most likely to happen when you get dressed immediately after tanning.
To minimize the chance of the tint transferring to clothing, we recommend that you wear loose-fitting, darker clothes after your spray session. Try to refrain from physical exertion that could result in you sweating until you shower and wash off the cosmetic bronzer. The cosmetic tint is water-soluble. Therefore, in most cases, the color will come out of clothing in the wash.
What is DHA (Dihydroxyacetone)?
DHA is an acronym for Dihydroxyacetone. DHA is an ingredient derived from sugar cane and beets, which reacts with the amino acids in the skin to create the darkening reaction or tan. Read The DHA Story for more information about DHA and how it is used in sunless tanning products.
What is a cosmetic bronzer?
The component of a sunless product that gives a a tanner immediate color for that "just off the beach" look. Ingredients used in sunless cosmetic bronzers are similar to those used in cosmetic foundations or bronzing powders.
When should you exfoliate?
You should exfoliate before every sunless session. Using a mild shower gel/exfoliant, can be done one day prior to the session. You should allow at least 8 hours between body scrub use and the sunless session.
Will solution stain my hair?
No. Most people will not see any effect on the color of their hair. Customers with light blonde, gray or platinum hair may see some discoloration from the cosmetic bronzers initially; however, this color will wash out with the first shower after the session. It is important when spraying to not spray directly into the hairline. We recommend and provide a hair cap for each use. Note: when wearing a hair cap, make sure to pull the cap back to expose the hairline and behind the ears, otherwise you will create a hard line around the forehead and temples.
Should I let my skin rest between spray sessions?
We recommend that after every 5 weeks of spray tanning, the client allow their skin to rest for 10 days. This allows the customer to completely loose their tan periodically which eliminates patchiness or uneven areas of wear. These areas are caused by normal contact with clothing and other surfaces which cause additional exfoliation.
Will I turn "orange"?
No. We have perfected the spray tan, giving customers that "just off the beach" look and transition smoothly into their DHA color that will later develop. The "orange" color, as it is sometime called, is the result of high pH levels within the skin.
What is barrier cream and when to use it?
Barrier cream is used to protect the areas of skin that are more porous such as the hands, feet, elbows, etc. We provide barrier cream to all customers for each spray tan session. Barrier cream should be used before every spray tan session. Hands should be washed immediately following the spray tan session.
How to remove spray tan solution from unwanted areas?
Every now and again you might get too much of a good thing, or not do too good a job with pre spray tan exfoliation and barrier cream and finish with dark patches on knees, elbows, or hands. Anybody that ever came down with a bad case of patchy spray tan will usually head straight to the computer and Google: “How to Remove Spray Tan”. We recommend each customer consult with their personal physician before trying any of the following tricks:
SUGAR & LEMON - Mix together one cup of raw sugar and ¾ cup of lemon juice. Using raw sugar is essential as the rough granules scrub away the tan. Rub the mixture over your skin and leave it to sit for a few minutes. After, rinse off with warm water.
BICARBONATE OF SODA & LEMON - Mix half a cup of bicarbonate of soda (not to be confused with baking powder) with half a cup of lemon juice until a smooth paste forms. Apply to your skin and allow it to sit for a few minutes before wiping off with a cleansing cloth. You may have to repeat this process a few times, but it works! Please consult your
HAIR REMOVAL CREAM - Want a quick way to remove your glow? Hair removal cream and waxing will instantly strip your skin of your tan, so if you make a mistake, immediately spray a little of the hair removal cream onto the area and wipe off!
How long after tanning should I wait to enjoy a pool/spa/ocean?
We recommend avoiding these situations for the first 48 hours following your spray tan. Chlorinated pools & spas can increase the rate in which the skin exfoliates causing the tan to wear and fade.
Can pregnant women be safely sprayed?
Our Sunless Spay Solution is non-toxic and utilizes eco-certified natural DHA. However, as you would before using ANY product, on an expectant mother, we recommend each customer consult with their personal physician before receiving a DHA tan application.
Is a DHA spray tan safe for a diabetic person?
We have received no feedback from any medical authority that would indicate a risk to a diabetic person, however, as you would before using any product on a diabetic person, we recommend each customer consult their physician before receiving a DHA spray tan application.
I have very sensitive skin, should I be concerned with a possible reaction to Advanta's Sunless solutions?
If you are concerned over allergies or skin reactions to the solution we recommend you first patch test a small area of the skin prior to a full body session.
Will sunless solution cause additional freckling to already freckled skin?
No. However, the spray does not cover freckles up either. What is darker will stay darker and what is lighter stays lighter in contrast.
Will I be sticky after being sprayed?
It is normal for there to have a slight sticky feel immediately following the session. The comfort drying air is also placed and aimed to perfectly complement the entire process and avoid tan-ruining things like vortices and irregular air-flow patterns
How dark will I appear after one application?
Results will vary based on the individual skin typel, level of clear and bronze the customer chooses, and pH balance.
Will a sunless tan protect me from UV sun rays?
No, your skin will still burn. The skin is not protected we recommend you still need to apply SPF lotions or sprays when in the sun. Our spray tan solutions do NOT contain any SPF.
